Bastardy Cases "It is a wise child who knows his own father" The Index of Bastardy Cases in Derbyshire Quarter Sessions Order Books. Covers the years from Easter 1682 to Easter 1784. Includes the mother's and putative father's names and the parishes of both parties plus the year and folio number. The bastardy bases which went as far as the Quarter Sessions are only a fraction of the total of illegitimate births during the period. Don't expect to find a lot of information in the Order books, at most one finds the occupation of the putative father and the marital status (if any) of the mother. Sometimes a relative stands as surety for the putative father. Please state at least one full name and a possible parish when asking for a lookup. |
