The family story (which came to the museum in a rather convoluted way and
does contain some inaccuracies) stated that it was made by a Mrs. Wilson,
great-grandmother of George Frederick Wilson, and that she was married to a
quartermaster general in the British army. So we traced back to his gg-grandmother,
Ellen Hardy Wilson, but alas there is no military record for her husband.
So we started over, to examine all the other branches of the family. It's
too soon to tell if the maker was Elizabeth Cobb Rains, but so far it is
looking like a good fit. What is so interesting to me is that the quiltmaker
appliqued 34 scenes in 3 borders with people figures; also the center medallion
shows a somewhat mysterious scene that may depict a wedding, with what may be a
bridal couple and eleven other figures who appear to be raking hay! It is my
gut feeling that all these scenes are very personal to the maker and probably
portray her own family. That is why I am so eager to identify the maker and, I
am hopeful, can relate the scenes on the quilt to her own family history.
One thing I've been looking for is twins born in the 1790s, as there is
one scene in which a female figure is facing a man in a redcoat uniform, and
she is holding up -- twins! And lo and behold, there on your Rains website --
John and Isaac, born in 1792, sons of Isaac and Elizabeth.
I've also had in mind that if that is a wedding scene, a July or summer
wedding date would be interesting, because of the hayraking activities -- and
now, you have supplied a summer wedding date -- 12 July 1789! Next, I'd like to
learn that Isaac Rains served in the military.
